Christian Süß – The full blooded-Borussia player
His whole life as a professional Christian Suss spent at Borussia: At the age of 16 he joined Borussia from third division TTC Altena, since then he has become one of the main pillars of success for Grafenberg.
At the tender age of three, the Ahleners table tennis career began in home's basement with his father and grandfather, with six years he already played for the TTC GW Hamm. Süß was addicted to the ping-pong-Virus at young age, and so the move to the Heidelberger table tennis boarding school, with 12 years, suprised little. The temperamental redhead developed outstandingly, he celebrated many successes at national level in the youth area and finally became European Cadet Champion in singles and with the team in 2001. After completing middle school in Heidelberg he began a dual career as a table tennis pro at Borussia Dusseldorf and at the same time as a trainee insurance salesman at Borussia´s main sponsor ARAG. However, it turned out that professional sport and vocational training are not compatible with each other and so, the then 16-year-old, concentrated on table tennis fully soon.
Still, it was quite a long way from Süß´engagement 2001, to countable success with the team: 2002/03 he took the German Championship as number 6 of the so-called boy band with Michael Maze, Magnus Molin, Lars Hielscher, Bastian Steger and Zichao Tian, but after that he didnt win any titles until 2006/07. However, in youth sector, Süß went further with great success: he was a three time European Youth champion in singles, in the team and in Mixed 2002, 2003 he successfully defended the title in singles and mixed doubles. In 2004 he took a World Championship silvermedal with the men's national team and the special double strength of the redhead from Ahlen, crystallized. he earned the doubles title at the German Championships in 2004 along with David Daus , the year after that, for the first time along with Timo Boll, and also in Mixed with Kristin Silbereisen. His great strength has always been his fighting spirit - which sometimes, in combination with his temperament, caused headache by the referees. Legendary, his so-called "Table kick" that occurs on the table, if he was annoyed by something. This habit earned him a few yellow cards, but served him well as a valve, to find his focus again.
2005 then Süß won his first big international title: Together with TImo Boll he won the silvermedal in doubles at the World Championship. Also Borussia got back to old strength: In 2006/06 the team with Petr, Korbel, Jun Mizutani, Süß, Danny Heister and Bartosz Such wo the ETTC-Cup - which was the start to the most succesful years in club´s history, which found their peak by winning the double-triple in 2009/10 and 2010/11. Christian Süß was really important for winning these titles, as he was absolutly reliable and always gave his best for the team.
In 2011 then there was a setback: Süß had to retire in a show match against Jean-Michel Saive: Caused by an unlucky movement, a piece of cartilage broke of his knee- a very unique injury in table tennis. Süß then did a surgery, fought back over months and came back at the home Team World Championship in Dortmund after 9 months, where he won the silbermedal with Timo Boll, Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Ptrick Baum. But he never came buck to his full strength in 2012 - because his knee wasnt fully recovered. Slowly the pain came back, finally in 2013 Süß had to do another surgery. This time he took more time to recover, and had to think about his future plans for his life. He dicided to complete the A-Coach-Education and even made up his Abitur, to work as a pilot, which is his second dreamjob.
In January 2014 he came back again. But the season was nearly finished. After the final of the German Championship at the 8th of June, the ways of Borussia Dusseldorf an Christian Süß will split after 13 years. This was the mutual agreement of the conversation of Süß and Borussia-Manager Andreas Preuß, in which Preuß made it clear that he has to build a team for the next season and sadly cant wait for Süß who was still not fully recovered after all his injuries. Süß on his side is looking for play practice and the guarantee of play and is starting for TTC RS Fulda-Maberzell in 2014/15. "Of course the seperation of Christian is really painfull. He is a full-blooded Borussia player and it hurts a lot to lose him", says Preuß. "It would be very nice if we could dismiss him with the German Championship title."
The fans will miss the emotional fighter as well, who characterized Borussia over the years.
